The past year has been one of profound changes.
My husband retired; we decided within a period of four months to pack up and sell our house of 30 years; and our first grandchild spent his first 21 days in the NICU.
We packed up 30 years of memories, put the majority of it in storage and moved to my grandparents’ place on the Tennessee River while we wait for our house in NC to be finished.
As it happened most of my jewelry equipment ended up in storage challenging me to create in different ways. Bits and pieces of silver, beads, stones and chains: Varied components waiting for a new life. This situation led to a new collection using pearls in a nod and recognition to the glory days of the TN RiverFresh Water Pearl Industry. I use the organic shape in simple styles to focus on the natural beauty of the pearls.
History and travel are part of me and will always be a part of my jewelry and creations but now my view is from a more sentimental introspection.
The events of the past year make me reflect on what is important. So many precious memories, thoughts and prayers.
Where do they go? What does one do with them?
I create my boxes and lockets with this purpose: a keepsake to hold memories, well wishes, prayers, or as a young customer suggested, Pixie Dust.
I want to make things more personal for my customers: customized lockets, baby boxes with initials, or birthstones imbedded within.
Fine Silver Metal Clay is still my medium of choice. It is amazing to me that a lump of minute particles of a metal in an organic binder when fired results in a beautiful creation of pure silver.
